The relationship of a flower with birds is one of mutual benefit. The gardener provides for some of the birds basic needs, and help birds to reduce insect populations, while addressing us an inexhaustible source of entertainment. Birds take their role as predators of insects seriously. A single bird will eat 500 to 1000 insects in an afternoon.

Birds have four primary needs: food, water, shelter and a place to raise a family. As you see, these needs are fully met.

Food

Two types of seeds, white millet seeds black oil sunflower seeds attract the most common fish-eating birds. These two seeds should be a pillar in your feeders. To broaden the diversity birds visiting your feeders, add seeds of specific species such as red proso millet, black and gray striped sunflower seeds, Niger thistle fields (for goldfinches, beluga and purple finches), sorghum and groundnut seeds (for chickadees and tufted titmice white).

Shelter

Birds need shelter to protect them against the elements and allow them to hide from predators. Dense, Twiggy shrubs and conifers are the refuge of choice for most birds.

Nesting Sites

Different species of birds have different nesting requirements, and you can find ready-made bird houses or build yourself the plans for almost all species of birds. Choose birdhouses that are weather resistant and have a sloped roof for rain. It should have holes in the sides and bottom for aeration and drainage. A roof hinged or removable is a bonus for you because it makes cleaning easier. The birdhouse should be cleaned after each nesting season.

To attract the type of birds you want at your feeder, you need to know what kind of wild bird seed each species prefers. For example, seeds black oil sunflower will attract a variety of songbirds including chickadees, finches, cardinals and grosbeaks, Siskin and sparrows, but not necessarily attract Orioles, tanagers and doves. Orioles and tanagers as suet and fruit, nectar, although doves and other birds feeding prefer corn, millet and sorghum. The peaks, however, prefer tallow.

Not only do you need to get The Right Kind of bird seed, but a seed of good quality too. It is best to get your seeds from a distributor of high quality. These bags of mixed bird seed that you find at the "Big Box" stores have often been sitting around in a warehouse for a long period and are far from being free. These seed mixtures for birds also have a lot of seed filling such as Milo and wheat that birds have not particularly like and have poor nutritional value. By offering such combinations, you will often find birds that will kick all the seed filling the road to get any of better quality seeds that remain. Worse still, the Milo may attract unwanted species such as cowbirds, grackles and starlings and squirrels uninvited and even rats.

Although these types of bird seed mixed bags are cheaper, you end up spending op really about the same if not more, than you would on a better quality mixes. Perhaps half or more of the latter is found on your patio, porch or in your yard is a mess and is wasted. Sometimes you even have to fight the weed seeds that begin to germinate on your lawn. So, try to get your bird seed from a bird shop premises or an easier way is to start a bird seed online store.

Many people will buy sunflower seeds, but do not realize all the sunflower seeds are not created equal. There are black oil sunflower and striped sunflower seeds. Go for the black oil. Yes, they cost a little more than scratches, but the black seed oil sunflower have twice as many calories per pound of scratches. In addition, their small size and thin shells are easier to crack open a greater variety birds the seeds thicker, harder shelled striped, only birds with large bills seed cracker can eat. If you love your birds, you give them the black oil. Enough said.

Now, if you do not want to serve only sunflower seeds, you can make your own mix food for wild birds. Try mixing sunflower seed kernels, white millet, cracked corn, red millet, peanut chunks millet and nuts to attract a variety of species such as doves, goldfinches, white-throated sparrows, finches, indigo buntings, juncos, purple finches, quail, towhee, white-crowned sparrow and other species. If you do not want to make your own, try to obtain a mixture which is entitled "No Waste". These mixtures have no input and all seeds are usually shelled so there is virtually no waste and less damage shelled accumulate below the feeder.

Butterfly and bird feeders attract beautiful creatures to your garden. Your main ways to provide foods with flowers and with appropriate feeders birds.

Many flowers attract both butterflies and hummingbirds. You can plant herbs such as sage and thyme. Also, try grass Cat, hyssop or lavender. Try other plants such as Butterfly Bush and bee balm. By planting flowers appropriate, you may be able attract butterflies and hummingbirds in your garden. Installation feeding horses provide a source of extra food beyond nectar. The bird feeders should attract songbirds. Take care of them outside of the wind in an area where they can hide from predators in the bushes or trees. Choose your food based on what varieties of birds you want to attract. Then sit back and watch as the creatures interesting visit your yard.

Niger seed is probably confused with thistle because goldfinches are known to eat thistle seed and use the downy fluff from thistle plants for their nests. In an attempt to differentiate these two terms in the spirit public, the Wild Bird Feeding Institute filed the trademark Nyjer in 1998. I do not think it was successful however because most people still think Nyjer seed is a kind of thistle and a noxious weed if allowed to develop.

When you purchase Nyjer seed, many companies use yet the word thistle on the package that has the unintended consequence of confusing the public even more. This bird seed is imported from India and Ethiopia and the USDA regulations must be sterilized, not to keep seeds from Niger from gushing, but to keep weeds are also mixed with the seeds of Niger from germination. You can now get non-sterilized seeds grown American Niger here in the United States.

Because Nyjer seed is so expensive (more than a dollar a pound in 2008), it is important to nurture those seeds in the feeders specially designed. A good Nyjer seed bird feeder will allow several birds to feed both seedless excess being wasted. Bird feeders thistle tube should be your first choice in my experience. Small cracks in the polycarbonate tubes these feeders allow only finches to draw the seed at a time. This limits the amount of seed lost.

Feeders Nyjer seed bird wire mesh would be my second choice. These feeders allow flocking goldfinches to feed wherever they land, plus some contain large quantities of Nyjer seed. They are probably better used with a seed tray below to catch seed sown.

A Thistle sack bird feeder is an expensive proposition since the initial cost the feeder goes. Made of durable nylon fine mesh, these feeders allow as many finches to feed as can comfortably hang on bag of thistle. They are now available in black which makes the beautiful goldfinches really stand out. These mesh bags will cost you more in the long run than other types of Nyjer seed bird feeders because seeds lost.
