The Baltic might not be the first place that comes to mind when considering a luxury yacht charter holiday, but during the summer Scandinavian short, is a magical place with warm breezes and almost 24 hours of daylight. Even as far south as Stockholm, summer nights are never completely dark, the sky is just a deep blue tint for a few hours before the sun comes back again. The best time to visit is June to September, as elsewhere in Europe in July and August are the busiest. For a totally Swedish experience, visit during Midsummer (usually around June 20), the longest day of the year and one of the most celebrated holidays in Sweden. To avoid crowds, visit in September (or even at the end of August) when the heat of summer still lingers and you have more space for yourself.
Begin your trip by spending a few days exploring Stockholm, the beautiful capital of Sweden, before heading out on your yacht. The Stockholm archipelago is length of approximately 150 miles by 50 miles wide and contains about 30,000 islands and islets, some green with luxury hotels, shops and restaurants, other a simple bare rock. You do not have to go far to get to Fjäderholmarna (islands Feather). These 4 islands are located 25 minutes from Stockholm and you might be tempted to keep cruising since you just started, but they are well worth a stop. Fjäderholmarna home to many restaurants, cafes, a smoking seafood (with a restaurant and take away shop), shops, local artisans, an outdoor theater and Mackmyra whiskey distillery, where you can visit the facilities and try their products.
Vaxholm, about an hour by boat from Stockholm, was founded in 1647 and has been a hub Archipelago since the late 1800s when he was discovered by Stockholmers rich who built vacation homes on the island and began spending their summers here. Today, Vaxholm has about 10,000 year round residents and many visitors, especially during the summer. The port is in the center This very walkable city, so you can stroll around and take in the sights. There are many shops, restaurants, cafes, a few grocery stores, a liquor store and a pharmacy. Outstanding sites include Bogesund castle (built in the 1640s) and Vaxholm Citadel (built 1833-1863) no longer used for military purposes, but instead houses a museum, a shop, a bistro and a B & B.
Grinda is about 2 hours from Stockholm and its many sandy beaches and rocky outcroppings are a popular destination for swimming in Stockholm. The island is small, at Only 15 minutes by foot in diameter and has a pub, a grocery and a well known hotel and restaurant, Grinda Wardshus, housed in an Art Nouveau building 1908. There are kayaks available for rent from the hotel, and they can also organize activities like rock climbing or archery.
Sandhamn (Sand Harbor) on the island Sandon (Sand Island) is the capital "yachting" in the Stockholm archipelago. The Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) have built their clubhouse here in 1897 (still in use) and their many annual races attract sailors from around the world. The best known is perhaps 2 days of race "Gotland Runt" (Round Gotland). This particular event is also famous for the many parties taking place in Sandhamn both before and after race. The city has many restaurants, bars and shops and some hotels and museums. There are also several beaches on the island, and most large, Trouville, is only 20 minutes walk from downtown.
With more than 60 ports of hosts in the Stockholm archipelago, there are many more places to visit and sights to see, but what are some places to get started in your planning.
